Attributed to Philip Goatcher 1851 – 1931 Italian Coastal Scene, set within the Boulder Town Hall Stage, as a curtain drop. 21.5 x 26 cm (top corners rounded). Watercolour heighted with white. Contemporary to the frame, inscribed in ink, ‘Philip Goatcher’s design for the front curtain hung in the Boulder Town Hall. 22 June 1908’ Under this in the same frame, a modern colour photograph depicting the Boulder stage and the actual curtain by Goatcher. This, whilst similar, differs from the subject watercolour. Apparently, Goatchers only surviving mural/theatre work is in Kalgoorlie, Collie and New Norcia. At one time, it is recorded Goatcher was the highest paid theatre scene painter in the world. His career was extensive here in Perth, the Eastern states, the U.K. and the USA. This watercolour is likely a preparatory or alternative work for the Boulder theatre.
