First Vice Consul New York 1906; Vice Consul Kasal District Belgian Congo 1909; seconded for service under Zanzibar Gov’t. 1911; Secretary to First Minister of the Sultan and as Director of Public Education; employed in Colonial Office in connection with transfer of Zanzibar to that Dept. 1913; Consul Calais 1913; Mexico City, 1914; Consul General for Republic of Mexico 1915; in charge of H. M. Legation, 1915 and
1916; H. M. Charge d’Affaires, Mexico 1917 and 1918; Acting Consul General Algiers 1919 and 1920; Consul General Cologne 1920-1924; Consul General Rotterdam 1924-1927; Consul General Genoa 1927- 1934; Consul General Milan 1934-1937; Edward Thurstan’s C.M.G. was decorated for his services while he was His Majesty’s Consul-General and Charge d’Affaires in Mexico City 1917
It must be remembered this took place during WW1, when Mexico was neutral and a political hotbed of radicals, and U.S. invasion was a constant threat
This would have been an extremely important position, which if handled the wrong way could have led to the war going in a completely different direction
