April Tribal Artefacts and Art Auction

  Lot 53

53

Large Aboriginal Message Board.

Central Desert, Australia. L: 86; W: 9; D: 2 cm. Each side is decorated with three groupings of finely executed concentric circles—twenty-five within each set—carefully incised and rhythmically arranged across the surface. The carving is dense and deliberate, with interconnecting “travel lines” linking the circular fields. Emu footprint motifs are also clearly articulated, anchoring the design within a specific narrative and geographic framework. Such iconography is not ornamental in a Western sense; rather, it encodes ancestral journeys, sites, and Dreaming affiliations tied to custodial rights and ceremonial knowledge. The surface is covered in a deep red ochre, with minor edge losses.

Sold for AU$2,600
Estimated at AU$1,000 - AU$1,500
