AGAS 1 party at Lokopas (in sarongs made from parachute silk). From left: Ma'aruff bin Said, Sgt Jack Wong Sue, Maj Gort Chester, Skeet Hywood, Mahammed Sariff.

Jack Wong Sue DCM JP, born 1925 Perth, died 2009 Perth, was one of Australia’s world war two heroes.  In 1950 he was awarded Australia’s, Distinguished Conduct Medal for his actions against the Japanese enemy in Borneo.

In 1943 he enlisted with the RAAF where he was trained on rescue boats.  Due to his Chinese heritage, and fluency in Chinese and Malay he was asked to join the elite and secretive “Z Special Unit,” also known as, “Z Force”.

His code name was “agent AKR 13”.  Upon arrival in Borneo, he became part of operations involving surveillance, sabotage and the training of the local resistance fighters against the 37,000 or so incumbent Japanese.

He was also involved in “Operation Kingfisher”, a plan to rescue prisoners from the notorious and brutal Sandakan prison camp.  However, no rescue was to occur, which was to haunt Jack in subsequent years.

In the foreword of the book “Blood on Borneo”, (by Sue, about his adventures during the war), Major General Michael Jeffery, AC. CVO, MC, KSt.J, Cit. WA, describes combat operations in the jungle as, “tough, dirty, close range and nerve wracking.”  He goes on to describe the extreme risk and the lack of back up support as well as the process of being inserted behind enemy lines by submarine, flying boat or parachute in order to report upon Japanese activity.

At the end of the war Sue was left a physical and psychological wreck yet was able to recover and forge a successful civilian life.  He opened W.A.’s first retail diving outlet in 1951.  This subsequently became the largest diving training facility in the State.

We at McKenzies Auctioneers feel privileged to have been selected to auction the collection of a great Western Australian, Jack Sue.
