Rupert Bunny is regarded as one of Australia’s finest

painters active around the end of the 19th and

             beginning of the 20th century.

Besides lyrical depictions of the French countryside he

is chiefly remembered as a painter of women, religious

             and classical subjects.

For the subject artwork, five pen and ink studies are

known as well as a small oil study. This artwork was

exhibited at London’s Royal Society of British Artists in

1902.The painting depicts the woman known as

Veronica, who according to theologians wiped the face of

Jesus with her veil as he was on his way to crucifixion.

According to the legend, Christs face was then imprinted

             upon the fabric.

In 1901 Bunny sent another religious picture, ‘The

Conversion of the Valerian’, to Bendigo for the

Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, where the picture won

the gold medal over top competition, including ‘Bailed

Up’ and ‘Shearing the Rams’, both by Tom Roberts.

According to David Thomas in his major book about

Bunny (Rupert Bunny, Lansdowne Australian Art

Library, 1970), his art was ‘eclectic by nature’, … and

subject to the major trends and influences of the times

(page 20). However he goes on to say, ‘but he had

a creative approach which allowed his work to remain

fresh and alive throughout his life’ (page 22).

Fox, after initial studies in Melbourne, travelled to France

and studied at the Academie Julian then the Ecole des

Beaux – Arts also in Paris.

He was considered along with Bunny, as one of

Australia’s most important expatriate painters of the

period. During his career he painted throughout

France depicting peasants, villages, farm scenes and

coastal scenes such as the subject here.

Whilst we do not know the view the subject picture

depicts, it is most likely a French coastal scene but,

could be a Cornish scene, perhaps St Ives?

The painting displays a fluid and confident technique.

Fox was a proponent of painting outdoors on site, to

capture the mood and atmosphere. His landscapes were

characterised by either mist or sunlight, the subject

picture with its subdued and atmospheric light could

             be described as misty.

Ruth Zubans, in her book on Fox, (E. Phillips Fox, His

Life and Art, The Miegunyah Press, 1995), page 41,

says; ‘Although Fox’s contact with Impressionist

painting was crucial, he used the techniques in a

personal way, retaining some of the features he clearly

admired in the Barbizon painters – such as the muted

toning’s that can be seen in some of his landscapes.’

Label attached explaining the story of Gibralter Jack.

“Adapting their former ways to a new environment early

gentlemen settlers found a most popular sport in

coursing the kangaroo, transforming the hunt into

the life and ways of the time. Lacy brilliantly captures

it in terms of its English background.

The Colonial squire in his red coat and high boots, the

special Australian breed of Kangaroo dogs, the ‘trophy

tail’, few of the details of the scene escaped Lacy’s

notice of the new antipodean version of the fox hunt.

Gibralter Jack was a large grey kangaroo, elusive to

his captors on many occasions. Killing a number of

valuable dogs, he roamed near the Campaspe -

             probably near Epilock Weir.”
